The Secretary of State, Mississippi Forestry Commission and the local school district work cooperatively to manage more than 475,000 acres of 16th section timber lands. The Secretary of State and Mississippi Forestry Commission operate under a memorandum of understanding between the two agencies, and the local school districts sign contracts with the Mississippi Forestry Commission to provide timber management services. Timber is sold by competitive bid.
