Secretary Watson Proclaims National Poll Worker Recruitment Day

JACKSON, Miss – In conjunction with the U.S. Election Assistance Commission (EAC), Secretary of State Michael Watson proclaims August 23, 2023, as National Poll Worker Recruitment Day. This day of action is meant to assist poll worker recruitment efforts throughout Mississippi and across the nation.

"Poll workers, in addition to circuit clerks and election commissioners, are the unsung heroes of our elections. Their efforts are critical to providing a positive and smooth experience at the polls," said Secretary Michael Watson. "We encourage Mississippians to consider volunteering for this invaluable civic duty as it takes all of us to ensure free and fair elections in Mississippi."

According to the EAC, America has faced a critical shortage of poll workers since 2020, and Mississippi is no different. During meetings with county circuit clerks and election commissioners on Secretary Watson's 82-County Tour, adequate staffing of poll workers continued to be a serious issue.

In order to assist with fair compensation for poll workers, Secretary Watson worked with the 2023 Legislature to increase poll worker pay to a maximum of $200 for Election Day depending on the county.

In Mississippi, any qualified elector of the county may serve as a poll worker. Those interested in serving may complete a registration form found on the Secretary of State's website. The Secretary of State’s Office sends registration information directly to county circuit clerks and election commissioners. Local election officials will contact those whose services are needed.
